Day 3 Islands, Bridges, Tiny Towns

Today we awoke to drizzle and bright skies. The sun rises at 4:54am 😳 It’s bright and early in these here parts! Todd, Emily, and Katie went disc golfing 15 minutes down the road to a course they found and I stayed back to make bacon for their return two hours later. They said it was a wet course with lots of tall plants which seems to be the norm here since they get a lot of rain and everything grows.

Speaking of growing, it seems like many houses have their own gardens here. It’s just starting to be summer and the spring flowers are still blooming. Everything seems to be coming alive after the winter.

We drove directly south to Deer Isle thinking that we would check out this tiny fishing town. Sadly it wasn’t much of a town. There was a dock and a ferry to another island but with only a few restaurants and seemingly no open tourist shops, we drove through Main Street quite quickly.

We drove through some small streets and found a beautiful lily pad pond that had a posted sign explaining some shocking details about ice shipment down to the Caribbean. Who knew?

We also came across this cute mini village which was a pet project of a local townsmen until he died. One building a year and they even had little people inside. What a cute hobby for someone who wanted to honor their cute coastal village.

When we felt like we’d seen all there was to see, we ventured down the road to see more of the coastline and even a cute beach. There was a family heading out to kayak just as we arrived with the tripod I finally remembered to take group shots.

We were not in the mood for water sports so we set off to find a restroom before our short journey back to the air bnb. Unfortunately we found a cute town with a coffee shop but no bathroom. We were forced to use a very clean port-a-potty while making several jokes about the company’s name…

The scenery on our drive today was stunning. This is the Maine that we think of in our heads. Calm water, lots of boats, coastal architecture, and trees. Lots of lots of tree lined coasts.

Where are we exactly? We are on coastal Maine. Here’s a map showing the blue dot of our AirBnB on Castine, and the “town” of Stonington that we drove to. It was only 40 minutes one way but the drive was gorgeous with lots of cute houses, random cemeteries on the side of the road, and some dilapidated shacks.

We had a great day exploring despite there being very little to do in Stonington. After relaxing back at the cottage for a bit, we drove into the town of Bucksport for a fancy dinner. We scoured Yelp and Todd found a restaurant with good reviews and scallops! This was a request by Grandma Joyce. Before we ate, we checked out the local bridge that is quite the showstopper.

The Waldo-Hancock Bridge sounds like it was an engineering masterpiece for its time in 1931 but the rebuilt one that we saw was exquisite as well.

Dinner was splendid. Only photos of the food but our overall review was wonderful food and delightful service. Our only critique was that the butternut squash ravioli was undercooked, but it seemed like fresh made pasta! The scallops were well loved and the meatloaf was devoured.

So we had some lemon drops before all of that began, dinner was great, and yet we still couldn’t resist ordering dessert and yes we got three and we ate them all. We were stuffed by the time we finally walked out.

And so we shuttled off to the Dollar Tree for odds and ends before heading back to the cottage…but first! A lighthouse! There is one not far from our place so we decided to go check it out. Gosh are we glad that we took this after dinner drive. We learned so much about this region as a French fort was built here in the 1630’s. Then the British Empire took it over until it finally became a state in 1820. There were a ton of cool historical signs around the tiny town and it was actually more inhabited than Stonington.

It was a cool discovery considering that our intention was just to go find the lighthouse. Which was cute and small but surrounded by other gorgeous homes.

Overall, we had a really good day. Saw some cool stuff, played disc golf, read about the history of the area, ate good food, and  then relaxed with a Nate Bargatze Netflix special. Just a good good day.
