Magnolia, Munchies, and The Best Pizza in Waco

Yes, our purpose for staying in Waco was indeed to check out the famous Magnolia Silos, Magnolia Press, and the Magnolia Table restaurant. We are huge fans of the HGTV show Fixer Upper and this was a must do for us on our tour of Central Texas.

So we headed straight to the bakery this morning and grabbed croissants, cookies, and a cinnamon roll. There were no complaints, but lots of photo ops!

It’s clear that Chip and Joanna know how to market - or they have an amazing person who markets their product! Everything at the Silos is well staged and ready for a Disney experience. We obliged with many photos.

They have a darling outdoor garden full of veggies and everything gives the feeling of “you could do this too!” It’s a very inspiring mood. After the Silos, we strolled down the street to Magnolia Press which is like a huge Starbucks, Magnolia style. More photo ops and some spacious seating. I can imagine that all of these places are packed in the summers. Day after Christmas, not too bad!
After checking out the finds at the Findery, we headed up to Cameron Park. This is a massive 20 acre park along the river here in Waco. We found some lovely stately homes, but we parked and immediately found our challenge. Jacob’s Ladder. This was a beast of a mountain that we climbed up with a mismatched staircase with uneven treads. We got a workout!
And a beautiful home - most were built in the 40’s as Zillow showed us, but gosh, these were stunning!
We enjoyed a lot of driving around and checking out the hills of Waco - yes, there are hills in Texas! Maybe they are all in Cameron Park, but it was a beautiful drive. Zillow tempted us by telling us that these stately mansions were just $400-$600k but you’d have to deal with the Texas humidity and this crew has already decided that we can’t trade our California weather for a taste of Texas.

Harp Design was closed, but we cruised on by and grabbed an obligatory shot.

We headed back to our hotel for some family fun time and board game laughs. Have you played “What Do You Meme?” It was gifted to us by Katie’s boyfriend and it was a load of laughs this afternoon as we needed a little downtime after traveling all day yesterday.
These signs are found all over the highway down here. Pretty cute advertising if you ask me.

We geocached today too! This is actually a really fun digital scavenger hunt app that’s a game you can play in any city, anywhere. It’s really fun because if you have some downtime and are looking for a challenge, this is a fun family activity. We found ourselves in a cemetery with an easy fine for Miss Emily. Score for her! Berrybunch strikes again!

And then there was dinner. Wow. Yelp led us in the right direction on this one. We went south of Waco and took the scenic route to see Lake Waco. We also happened to drive through an amazingly beautiful neighborhood with Christmas lights galore. Turns out, these were million dollar homes. I just love the Zillow app.

So dinner, it was amazing. Todd and I talked about how it reminded us of Rome. The pizza was made in a wood fired oven and the thin crust was amazing. We both agreed it was one of the best meals we’d had in a while. We had happy hour appetizers of calamari and bruschetta. Todd’s glass of red wine looked lovely but I had a headache already so I drank a few glasses of water. Which by the way, is good! Sometimes tap water in other states isn’t as great as our Northern California water, but this stuff was good. We sat at the bar since the table wait was 30 minutes. We were a bit separated from Kate and Em so we sort of had a private dinner. There’s nothing like a quiet dinner with your honey to remind you that you are blessed to be married to him.

Check out this photo of our Honey Bear. The pizza - was to die for. A little spicy, but delicious. Glad I read all those recommendations on Yelp!

And now we are stuffed and happy. Lesson for today, get off the beaten path and venture outside of the main attraction when you’re on vacation. You just might find the best pizza you’ve had since Rome.
